Paying in Japan
Credit Cards
In my experience debit and credit cards are usually accepted, especially in most restaurants and stores, but there are also of course cases in which you can’t use the card.
You should make sure that your card doesn’t charge you extra for usage abroad.
App
Most of the time when cards are not accepted you could still pay here with some of the payment apps here in Japan. Most of them might not be available outside of Japan, but I think it would be possible to use LINE Pay as a tourist here.
Cash
Sometimes you’ll still need cash and it’s always nice to have it with you just in case. While it’s possible to exchange it at your bank this will lead to some extra fees by the bank itself.
The cheapest way to get Japanese cash is at the ATM in convenience stores in Japan. You can get up to 100.000 ¥ per transaction and only pay up to 220 ¥. You will still have to check if your credit card charges for usage in Japan, though.
